Born on November 3, 1933, in Hutchinson, Kansas, Aneta Corsaut was the child of Jesse Harrison and Opal J. Corsaut. Her educational journey led her to Northwestern University, where she initially pursued drama studies.

Additionally, she received acting instruction from the renowned acting coach, Lee Strasberg. Although she eventually discontinued her formal education to fully embark on her acting career, she continued to hone her skills by taking courses at UCLA.

Career

Aneta Louise Corsaut embarked on her acting journey in the mid-1950s in New York City. A pivotal moment in her career came in 1958 when she and Steve McQueen made their film debuts in the independent cult horror film “The Blob.”

Her television career saw her portray Irma Howell on the CBS sitcom “Mrs. G. Goes to College” from 1961 to 1962. Corsaut’s most notable role came in 1963 when she first appeared on the long-running series “The Andy Griffith Show” as schoolteacher Helen Crump, who later became the wife of the Mayberry sheriff in the first episode of the spinoff “Mayberry R.F.D.”

In 1965, she also took on the role of Kathy McLennan, the young widow of a rancher, in an episode titled “Paid in Full” on the syndicated Western anthology series “Death Valley Days.”

Corsaut’s television career continued to flourish as she had a recurring role as a pawn-shop-owner friend of policeman Bumper Morgan in the 1975–1976 series “The Blue Knight.” She also played Judy, Officer Pete Malloy’s girlfriend in the series “Adam-12.”

Her versatility as an actress shone through as she portrayed Head Nurse Bradley in the 1980s sitcom “House Calls” and made multiple appearances in the series “Matlock” alongside the star, Andy Griffith.

Additionally, Corsaut filled the role of nurse Jesse Brewer in 1977 on the long-running ABC soap opera “General Hospital” when the original portrayer, Emily McLaughlin, was unable to work due to illness.

Returning to her iconic role, she reprised Helen Crump in the reunion shows “Return to Mayberry” in 1986 and “The Andy Griffith Show Reunion” in 1993.

In addition to her acting career, Corsaut showcased her writing talent by coauthoring “The Mystery Reader’s Quiz Book.”
