Majjari Narasimha Reddy (Chiranjeevi) of Uyyalawada is a Palegar, a feudal lord with territorial administrative and military powers in the Rayalaseema region. He has control of several cities under his territory. First, he rebelled against the British because of the land tax system they imposed. So he brings unity among the Palegar. Even when their region faces a severe drought, British rulers force farmers to pay taxes or hand over their land.
And Narasimha Reddy emerges as a foothold to lead a rebellion with the help of peasants. As a Praja Yuddham created in 1847 against the British and became a source of inspiration for Jhansi Lakshmi Bai, who directed the mutiny of the strains of 1857 forms the rest of the story.
Artists’ actions:
Megastar Chirejeevi brings the screenplay from start to finish with its impressive performance and with a charismatic presence. At his age, Chiranjeevi tried his best to make us believe in him as a warrior. His great speech delivery and his size make him forget the limitations of his age. This is one of the best performances of his illustrious career.
As the film is all about Chiranjeevi, other characters are faded into the background. Other than Chiranjeevi, only two actors who leave some impact on the audience are: Amitabh Bachchan as Guru Gosayi Venkanna and Tamannah as his first love.
Nayanthara as the protagonist’s wife has limited running time. It doesn’t add much to the story other than being a whiny character. Jagapathi Babu lands a punch at the end. Sudeep and Vijay Sethupathi are there to make some extra mileage at the box office.
Technical excellence:
The film also joins the list of Telugu films which have been edited on a large scale. The production standards themselves are superior. The cinematography and set design are top notch. Rathnavelu handled the camera effectively. The style (costumes) also added effect. The action stunts in the first half are great.
The dialogues are good in ‘Neeku Enduku Kattalira Sistu’ episodes before intermission and climax parts. Of the two songs composed by Amit Trivedi, only “Sye Raa” is catchy and effective on screen. Julius’ soundtrack is perfect. Analyses
“Sye Raa” is a dream project for Megastar Chiranjeevi. Since hearing the life story of Narasimha Reddy of Paruchuri Brothers fifteen years ago, she thought of making it a reality and his dream finally came true by his producer son Ram Charan who invested nearly Rs 200 crore in this project. Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy led a rebellion against the British from a village in Kurnool in the 1840s. Though he is regarded as one of India’s first generation freedom warriors to fight the British, his name has not featured prominently in the books of history. It is said that he led the revolt in the Renadu region in 1840 and raised a people’s army. Narasimha Reddy was an unsung hero. This film captured all aspects of his life but in a cinematic way.
Assembled on a large scale, ‘Sye Raa’ also followed the pattern of films made about freedom warriors. Starting with Pawan Kalyan’s voiceover explaining India’s freedom struggle, the film takes the liberty of telling us that Jhansi Lakshmi Bai was inspired by the life of Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy.
So the story of Narasimha Reddy reveals that the film of Gosayi Venkanna trains the young Narasimha Reddy to be ready to fight for freedom etc.
The usual drama of establishing the various virtues of the protagonist and his romantic relationship with Tamannah takes its prime time. There is also a sequence of cow stamps like in “Baahubali 2”. Such movies were introduced to show Chiranjeevi’s power. However, the movie in the first hour is a big problem. The film comes to a head when Narasimha Reddy meets a British official who declares that he and his people will not pay taxes to the president. This leads to a massive attack on the bank of Coilkuntla. This process is well executed. The pre-interval sequences and the interval bang are handled quite effectively.
Post-interval, the film comes to the main point of how Palegars are united and how Narasimha Reddy builds an army of his own consisting of villagers and farmers and leads the battle. There is a war system and also a practice of backstabbing. Although it is a bit long, the second half is more interesting and the emotional ending leaves us in an emotional state. The film was mainly focused on war sequences and patriotic scenes which are superbly managed by the director Surender Reddy.
But it flickering completely in scenes representing the feeling of family, the romantic thread and also in a few other sequences. Many films are not overdone and lack the desired feel of a patriotic film.
Also, the film plays Narasimha Reddy’s role as if he has a battalion of soldiers to fight against the British authorities. Of course, Palegar is the only leader of the city of 50 or 60. Its reports in the story that he created soldiers and villages, but also been raised in two kings . Overall, “Sye Raa” makes an engaging watch with a terrific and emotional climax, superior craftsmanship, and has plenty of commercial elements despite the most important scenes and long runtime.
Moreover, it is the story of a freedom warrior of our land that has been largely suppressed in the pages of history. Kudos to this for bringing the story of an unsung hero to the screen.
