Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh Film Review: A pale and naïve debate on his position
Synopsis: Mahatma Gandhi survives Godse’s assassination attempt in this fictional story. The two come face to face in prison and discuss their respective ideologies. Review: The assassination of MK Gandhi and whether Nathuram Godse was justified has always been debatable, especially as of late. Rajkumar Santoshi’s latest offering tries to present both sides through a showdown between the main characters of the event, Gandhi (Deepak Antani) and Godse (Chinmay Mandlekar).
The film opens with the India-Pakistan partition and the communal violence that followed. Quickly establishes the complaint of the Hindu and Sikh populations against Gandhi for his sufferings. Nathuram Godse’s wrath and Bapu’s murder also follows very soon.
However, the pacing of the film slows down after that and the narrative drags on throughout the first half to establish context. It covers some pivotal events like Gandhi’s death fast for peace between Hindus and Muslims and conditions to end it.
The Gandhi versus Godse argument has been going on since 1948, but the film pales in presenting their debate, as such, since they are locked up in the same prison cell. The respective ideologies, actions and positions of the protagonists find space, but their war of words is not convincing enough.
Through the Gram Swaraj movement, the release also touches upon social issues such as untouchability and chastity and Gandhiji’s attempts to address economic or humanitarian exploitation and forge equality and justice. These are superficially depicted through the chain of incidents one after another and are used to establish how a narrative and public sentiment can be manipulated.
Deepak Antani and Chinmay Mandlekar share a striking resemblance to Gandhi and Godse respectively. Both the gesture and the diction of the actors are up to par. Other historical figures like Jawaharlal Nehru (Pawan Chopra), Babasaheb Ambedkar, Maulana Azad, Sardar Patel (Ghanshyam Srivastav) etc. are also famous. Gandhi Godse also features Tanisha Santoshi as Sushma and Anuj Saini as Naren.
While the former promises, the latter is acceptable. Rajkumar Santoshi’s direction keeps the drama gripping and dull, but the treatment of the film, Rishi Punjabi cinematography, with the play of light and macro videography is worth a mention. The events during the Partition are cleverly recreated, as is the historical setting. Asghar Wajahat’s dialogues are shocking especially Gandhi’s quotes like “Sarkarein hukumatein karti hain, seva nahin”.
The film takes a critical look at some of Gandhi’s ideologies, such as celibacy. The sight of her of Kasturba Gandhi telling her that he wronged her personally, the mention of Jayprakash Narayan, Harilal (Hiralal) and Manilal Gandhi or Godse reminding her of other leaders provide some accountability. AR Rahman’s music enhances the drama, both Vaishnav Jan To and Raghupati Raghav.
Alternate reality or history is an interesting take when viewed for reimagining only. Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh can be seen if you can sit patiently during the first part because the second half is enthralling. But it may disappoint those involved in the nation’s history.
