Bhediya Movie Review : This Bhediya will give you a howling good time!
Bhediya Story: Bhaskar, a road construction contractor, travels to Arunachal Pradesh to build a road through the dense jungle of Ziro. Besides the opposition of the tribes, his companions, cousin JD, friend Jomin and he, have a bigger challenge. A series of unexpected deaths occurs shortly after Bhaskar is bitten by a wild animal. Is it a figment of someone’s imagination or werewolf folklore come true? B
hediya’s review: Horror and comedy are, in themselves, difficult genres to make. Unless you have tight control over the storytelling and cinematic treatment, a film in either category can fail. And this is where Bhediya draws the aces. Director Amar Kaushik, who helmed horror-comedy Stree under the same banner, handles both genres deftly in his latest installment, striking a good balance to deliver a film that is chilling in some cases, tickling in almost all, and leaves you with something. Think about.
The mythology surrounding werewolves has always provided filmmakers with great fodder for their stories, and here, Amar Kaushik delves into the deep pockets of Arunachal Pradesh to tell a mysterious tale.
First of all, the most notable part of the film is its visual impact. While cinematographer Jishnu Bhattacharjee has beautifully created the dark and enigmatic world of werewolves against the backdrop of the full moon in the midnight sky, jungles and Ziro’s mountains, the visual effects are outstanding.
Monsters and creatures in movies can often become more fake than creepy due to poor makeup and effects. But not in Bhediya. The transformation of the protagonist from human to werewolf is gripping and terrifying. The film has many flips and the background soundtrack only makes things scarier.
Varun is top notch as the shapeshifting wolf. His act (a big part of which was the physical transformation with ripped muscles and a perfectly sculpted body) will hopefully change the course of his career. He gives his all to this part, and it shows. Be it the dramatic and energetic scene where he transforms into a bhediya for the first time, or the hilarious scene where he struggles to get into the werewolf skin in the second half, he stands out.
Abhishek Banerjee as Janardan aka JD is perfect and doesn’t miss a beat with his comedic timing. Even in the intense scenes, his comedy hits the ground running, adding a certain levity to this story that mostly takes place in the middle of the night. She also has the funniest lines in the movie. Paalin Kabak as Bhaskar’s northeastern friend Jomin completes the bhediya package and has great chemistry with both actors especially Abhishek.
Deepak Dobriyal as Panda also gives a remarkable performance. Kriti Sanon’s character as the vet Dr. Anika could have been developed better. But he brings his two cents to drama and comedy. The narrative very cleverly includes mentions of several films that continue to remain in the public memory for many reasons, including Jaani Dushman, Junoon with Rahul Roy, 90s animated show The Jungle Book and its title track” Chaddi pehenke phool khila hai, ‘, which will make you laugh out loud, and also ‘Toh main kya karu, marr jaun?’ by Shehnaz Gill Kudos to writer Niren Bhatt for that. The first half of the film is very exciting.
It perfectly establishes the tone of what will develop soon and also brings a sense of intrigue. However, the second half looks stretched out and loses momentum in parts. Could use more rigorous editing. While all the songs are catchy and easy to listen to, dropping a song or two would have tightened up the narrative.
Also, at times it feels like the movie is trying to achieve too much. While it focuses on conservation and human-animal conflict, a topic that requires a lot of attention, at the same time it briefly touches on stereotypes of people from the Northeast and how they often have to live with the label of ‘outsider’.
On another level, the film reminds us of our animal instincts and how there could be a bhediya in all of us. But how we wish to unleash it, for better or for worse, is up to us. Beauty and the beast are all within us, we just have to look within. The movie leaves you with an experience and a thought, perhaps deeper than Ziro’s woods. So, go out and check this one out. To have fun, it’s worth going to the theater. There’s also a nice surprise at the end. The film released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu is best viewed in 3D.
